SINGAPORE, April 29 -- Latest figures from Singapore's Ministry of Health showed that 422 new cases of HIV infection were reported in 2007, 65 more than in 2006 and bringing the total number to 3,482.

The ministry said on its website on Tuesday that 93 percent of the new cases were males.

Among the total 3,482 infected Singaporeans, 1,534 are asymptomatic carriers, 804 had AIDS-related illnesses and 1,144 have died.

The ministry said sex continues to be the main mode of HIV transmission. Of these, nearly two-thirds occurred via heterosexual sex.

The number of cases infected via intravenous drug use had halved to just seven.

More than half of the new cases were aged between 30 to 49 years of age and had late-stage HIV infection when they were diagnosed.

The ministry urged persons who have unprotected sex while engaging in high-risk behavior to use condoms properly and go for regular HIV testing.
